Setup Netgear DGN 1000

This article is for a novice who is venturing into modem/router set-ups for the first time.

Connecting the Modem Router: See Fig 1.

1)  Connect the ADSL Line.

You can use a separate splitter. External splitter can divide the data and voice, and then you can access the Internet and make calls at the same time. The external splitter has three ports:

• LINE: Connect to the wall jack

• PHONE: Connect to the phone sets

• MODEM: Connect to the ADSL port of the modem.

Plug one end of the ADSL cable into the ADSL port on the rear panel of the unit. Connect the other end to the MODEM port of the external splitter.

2)  Connect the Ethernet cable. Attach one end of a network cable to your computer’s Ethernet port or a regular hub/switch port, and the other end to the LAN port on the modem router.

3)  Attach the power adapter. Connect the power adapter to the power connector on the rear of the unit and plug in the adapter to a electrical point. Switch on the unit

4)  Power on the computer and LAN devices.

Next step is to configure your computers IP address. (For Win 7)

Click on the Start button->Control Panel->Network & Sharing centre. Click on ‘Change Adapter Settings’ (In the left Panel)

Right click on Local Area Connection->Properties->Double click on ‘Internet Protocol Version 4’->In the General Tab->Select ‘Obtain an IP automatically’  then select ‘Use the following DNS Addresses’

59.185.3.10 & 59.185.3.12 you are free to use any DNS addresses eg: Open DNS, Google DNS Comodo DNS.

Open DNS 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 & 208.67.220.222 & 208.67.222.220

& Google DNS 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4

Comodo DNS. 156.154.70.22 & 156.154.71.22

You can run the Ping command in the command prompt to verify the network connection.

Please click the ‘Start’ button on your desktop, in the search field type ‘run’ & in that window type ‘ping 192.168.1.1’, and then press ‘Enter’.

If the result displayed is similar to the screen below, the connection between your PC and the modem router has been established.

If in the same screen you get a display of ‘Timed Out’ it means that you’re PC has not connected to the unit. Check all your setting done so far to correct any errors.

Now for setting up this model.

The Web-based utility can be used on any Windows, Macintosh or UNIX OS with a Web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari. My setup is in the Windows environment & using Mozilla Firefox.

·         Open Firefox & type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar & pres ‘Enter’ Fig.5 (You can also enter either of these addresses http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com to access the wireless modem router).

·         A login window similar to the one shown in Fig 6 will display. Enter ‘admin’ for the router User Name and ‘password’ for the router Password, both in lowercase letters. 

 

If the above screen does not pop up, it means that your Web-browser has been set to a proxy. Go to Start->Control Panel->Network & Sharing Center→Internet Options→Connections→LAN Settings, in the screen that appears, cancel the Using Proxy checkbox, and click OK to finish it.

On the left side you will see the router Menu.

·         Setup Wizard. To specify the language, location, and automatically detect the Internet connection.

·         Add WPS Client. Add WPS-compatible wireless devices and other equipment to your wireless network.

·         Setup Menu. Set upgrade, and check the ISP and wireless network settings of your router.

·         Security Menu. View and configure the router firewall settings to prevent objectionable content from reaching your PCs.

·         Maintenance Menu. Administer and maintain your router and network.

·         Advanced Menu. Set the router up for unique situations such as when remote access by IP or by domain name from the Internet is needed.

·         Web Support. Go to the NETGEAR support site to get information, help, and product documentation. These links work once you have an Internet connection.

To run the Setup Wizard

Select Setup Wizard from the top of the router menus to display the following screen.

Select your country and language.

Country. It is important to specify the location where the wireless modem router operates so that the Internet connection works correctly. Default is UK.

Language. Default is English. You can select another language if you prefer.

Auto Detect Connection Type. Select either ‘Yes’ (If you selected Yes then with automatic Internet detection, the Setup Wizard searches your Internet connection for servers and protocols to determine your ISP configuration.) or ‘No, I want to configure the Router myself’. If you select No, then you will proceed to Manual Setup 

Manual Setup.

Select Set Up ->Basic Settings and select Yes or No depending on whether or not your ISP requires a login. The following Basic Settings screens show both forms of the Basic Settings screen.

We select Yes. Select the encapsulation method as PPPoE(PPP over Ethernet)  Enter the login name. This is the Tel No.

Enter the Password. This is the CA number which can be found on your Tel bill.

Idle Time Out. Leave it as it is. (Entering a value of 0 means never log out.)

Internet IP Address. Select Get Dynamically from ISP. Your ISP automatically assigns these addresses.

Domain Name Server (DNS) Address. Select ‘Use These DNS Servers’ & enter

NAT (Network Address Translation). Select Enable. (Usually NAT is enabled).

Click on ‘Apply’

DSL Settings. 

Select Setup > ADSLSettings to display the following screen. Fig 9

Multiplexing Method = LLC Based.

VPI=0

VCI=32

DSL Mode = Auto.

The VCI & VPI I have mentioned above is for MTNL For the other ISP’s in India it’s the following

Click Apply.

You should be able to connect to the Internet on your Desktop now. If you cannot connect to the Internet, you can do one or more of the following:

·         Check your settings to be sure you have selected the correct options and typed everything correctly.

·         Check the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties in the Network Connections section of your PC Control Panel. 

Now that your Desktop connect to the internet we now focus on wifi, to get your other devices to connect to the internet via wifi.

To change the wireless settings.

Select Setup > Wireless Settings to display the following screen.

Name (SSID). This is the name of your network. Change it to something meaningful but NOT your name or address/flat no. (Max 32 characters long)

Region. Select the relevant region from the drop down list box.

Mode. Up to 150Mbps is the default. If you have all wireless devices which supports ‘N’ then keep it at ‘upto 150 Mbps’.

Select ‘Enable Wireless Access Point’ to enable it.

Select ‘Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)’ to broadcast the SSID.

Do not select ‘Wireless Isolation’.

Security Options.    

Select ‘Disable’ to disable wireless this is temporary.

Now check if your wifi devices can connect to the Internet via your wifi. If yes then

Select WPA2-PSK (Wifi protected Access 2 with Pre Shared Key) to enable it.

And enter a password in ‘WPA2-PSK Security Encryption’.

Click on ‘Apply’.

Now try to access wifi on your wireless device via your wifi it will ask you for a password which is the same as what you entered above in ‘WPA2-PSK Security Encryption’.

Tip on password generation. I prefer to use v long passwords for my wifi & I find these two sites v useful for that.

(When you use a password 63 or 64 characters long copy paste it in your WiFi router then save the password in ‘Notepad’, then transfer this password to a pendrive & paste it in your laptops or wireless devices).

To make your wifi more secure I also use MAC filter. Trusted Wireless Stations lists the trusted computers that have access to your network.

In Fig 10 Click on ‘Setup Access List’.

Select ‘Turn Access Control On’ check box to enable access restriction by MAC

address.

In the 'Add New Station Manually' enter the name of your wireless device & its MAC address. Click on 'Add'. Enter the names/MAC address of all your device here

Then click on' Apply'.

  
You should now be able to access wifi on your wifi devices securely.
